Nearly three quarters of Internet users - and most young adults - basically do nothing on the web as they log on for no particular reason, a new study has revealed.

The report from the Pew Research Centre's Internet and American Life Project found that on any given day, 53 per cent of 18 to 29 year-olds go online just to have fun or pass time.

The survey also found that the amount of time people spend zooming around on the web doing nothing corresponds with age.

Only 12 per cent of people over 65 said they went online the previous day for no particular reason, the Age reported.

Of those aged 50 to 64, 27 per cent answered yes to the same question
